Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS):
A guide to Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Does your hand often feel numb, tingly, or painful after long hours of typing, lifting, or gripping? Read on.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?
It is a condition caused by the compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist joint.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
It is caused by local trauma; repetitive use of the hands for activities such as lifting, pulling, pushing, typing, holding, or gripping; strain and sprain of the wrist joint; inflammation; tendinosis; obesity; diabetes; rheumatoid arthritis; hormonal changes during pregnancy; or fractures of the wrist.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Increased pain especially at night while lying down and subsides during the day time
  • Reduced mobility of wrist joint and occasionally at cervical spine
  • Muscle weakness
  • Reduced strength in grip
  • Reduced use of hand during repetitive activities
  • Burning type of sensation, tingling and numbness around wrist and palmar aspect, atrophy of thenar muscle
  • And in severe cases sensory loss also seen at median nerve distribution.

How is CTS diagnosed?
CTS is typically diagnosed using electromyography, ultrasound, MRI, and nerve conduction studies.

Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Physiotherapy plays a key role in treating CTS conservatively. However, in severe cases, surgery for carpal tunnel release may be recommended.

At Health Plus Physiotherapy, we help our clients with CTS by using various electrical modalities such as IFC, ultrasound, and laser therapy for pain relief. We also provide strengthening exercises for weak muscles, stretching exercises for tight muscles to improve flexibility, tapping, night splints to maintain a neutral wrist position, manual therapy including soft tissue release, joint and nerve mobilizations, tendon gliding exercises, ergonomic education, advice on precautions and activity modifications, and a well-structured home exercise program focused on strength and endurance training.

The majority of patients with sacroiliitis have a good outcome, though it can take 2-4 weeks depending on the cause.
